The Rise of Lip Balms: A Threat to Traditional Lipstick?

As everyone knows, I have been working on the beauty counters since I was 16 years old. Working for Boots No7, I was introduced to a whole variety of lipsticks and makeup shoppers. I learnt from an early age that people can be very specific of the shade of lipstick they want. The certain pantone of coral you know? Beauty Counter girls are you getting shivers? We've all been there, unfortunately at least once a week, if not shift.

There was a craze of lip balms in 2016. The EOS lip balms were in everyone's schoolbags, pockets at all times. Zoella was a big influencer back in those days and whatever she had, we had. Am I right? Having to have every single flavour of the Nivea range. Using a Nivea lip balm brings back great nostalgia from my young teenage days, (That I am far away from now). The craze of the lip balm never died out with our generation and we have grown a bit of a dependence for these products.

Dermatologists claim that the over usage of the moisturising lip products can lead to a dependence for them. However, I have had some customers over the years tell me that they are addicted to lip balms. This is not the case. With the overuse of soothing products like; menthol, peppermint oil, and beeswax, can actually cause your lips to become irritant and chapped. So, you apply your lip balm to get that instant soothing satisfaction to try and heal your lips. It is a vicious cycle.

I think Dior for me started the lip balm trend within the premium beauty scheme with their famous 'Lip Glow'. This lip balm I feel is quite reasonably priced for the product. Now, do not get me wrong, you are paying for the name of the brand 100%. You can get a Nivea lip balm that will do the job for less than £5. It is getting that luxury of owning something from Dior. This lip balm is the first of it's kind, infused with cherry oil, it hydrates your lips for 24 hours. The colour technology adapts to your lips that gives you a custom glow. The Dior Lip Glow shade 001 pink I think is the generic gateway product into the brand. I was gifted a Lip Glow when I started as Boots Beauty Specialist three years ago, that was something that I wouldn't buy myself. Now, every day I have at least one Dior product on.

The craze for lip balms, treatments and lip oils have hit the beauty industry like a tornado. Dior had their lip oils go viral on Tik Tok, we couldn't keep them on our shelves they were selling like hot cakes. This issue we had with Clarins also. Everyone wanted these lip oils. In recent weeks NYX have brought out a new lip oil that is incredible. It is called 'FAT OIL' and it's only £7.99. For that price, I genuinely think it is a steal, it's so thick and hydrating on the lips.

Lip oils are different from lip balms as they are made from natural oils unlike lip balms, which mostly are made from artificial oils, these natural oils will keep your lips hydrated for hours and there is not a need to reapply.

Every brand has now started to bring out different lip treatments. Fenty Beauty have a new lip balm out, £16. This lip balm is infused with cherry oil, shea butter and Vitamin E. Common ingredients now used by the manufacturers and brands. I have to say, skincare is really stepping up, even the lip balms are carefully researched and thought out. Mothers, family of teenagers, if your teenager is going into secondary school and they're listing off big brands that you perhaps never had access to as a kid, look into if the brand has a lip balm. Most cases now they do and they are never more than £20.

Kids and teenagers these days are really into their brands, I thought it was bad when I was a child it was bad, having to prove the authenticity of products. Getting picked on because my Kylie lip kit was 'fake'. I fear today, the pressure on parents for their children to have the best is sky high. I see the customers wanting the likes of Chanel and Dior getting younger and younger. A premium brand lip balm your teenager can have in their school blazer pocket, without getting into trouble. (I work in a school Monday to Friday, I know school policies) Here are some lip products that you can get your child, or ask for, for Christmas or your birthday.

Drunk Elephant - Lippe Balm £19

Laneige Lip Glow Balm - £14

Bobbi Brown Lip Tint Mini- £12.50

Sol de Janeiro - £16

Ole Henricksen Pout Preserve - £17

Kylie Skin Lip Butter £20

If you don't have a go to lip balm, and don't know where to even start. I have listed some ingredients to look out for that I completely recommend, that will get your lips looking absolutely luxurious and feeling amazing.

Different Ingredients that are in lip balms that are to look out for !

Barbados Cherry (Acerola & Wild Cherry Extracts.

Do not fret, the bullet lipstick will never go out of style. MAC Cosmetics have a new lip stick range out, the 'Macximal Silky Matte Lipstick'. These lipsticks are absolutely beautiful and they stay on a lot longer than the original lipsticks. They are £25! who remembers when the MAC lipsticks used to be £15.50? …Inflation. (Insert Eye Rolling Emoji)

These lipsticks are a rebrand of their original, iconic matte lipstick. They have more colour, more comfort and more wear in them. Belfast MAC artist Josie applied 'Lady Danger' on my lips during their launch. I ate and drank and yet my lipstick had not budged. If you are looking a beautiful, sustainable and vibrant new bullet lipstick. Look no further, MAC have the best range. Pop into the Mac Artists in Boots Belfast, Kathryn, Grace and Josie or the Beauty Specialists will be on hand to help you choose the best colour to compliment your features.
